‘Kingkong’ boss made learning from him impossible
Letter from K FWOOI READ with interest Joseph Tay’scommentary,“Kingkong syndrome in the S’pore workplace†(Nov 17) regarding grooming of employees. The company I currently working does not provide any sort of training for staff on contract for two years or less. They do not regard training as important. I have attended one-day training sessions just once a year or so, conducted by company staff. I have also asked for training courses that would lead to some kind of recognised certification. But I was turned down because mycompany feared that once I was certified, I would leave for another workplace  and because I am a contract staff. In my experience with another company years ago, I was supposed to be guided and trained by a senior officer, who treated me all right but never imparted any knowledge. His rationale was that he himself took 20 years of hard work and suffering to learn the trade. Frustrated, I left for another company .I understood his reasoning well. He was not well educated and had risen from a very junior position. And, he was just protecting his rice bowl. The company needed him and accepted his viewpoint. So, is he a 'kingkong' to the company?
